Kitchen Wall Paint Ideas

To make your kitchen a more popular room for the family, think about creating a look that reflects your own unique personality.
Outlined below are some wall painting ideas to help get you started and to make your own kitchen stand out.

Bright Colors

Be daring enough to go for the bright colors like yellows, oranges and even peach to open up your kitchen. The brighter the color, the more inviting and airy your kitchen will appear. For example, a glorious shade of yellow can make your kitchen feel large, clean and fresh. Use lemon yellow or a deep orange citrus shade to create a tropical ambiance.

Be Bi-colored

If you want to step away from the ordinary single paint color and be different, go for it with two or even three shades of the same color of your choice. For instance, you can paint the ceiling one shade of pink and then paint the walls another shade of pink. You can also do the trim and moldings in yet another hue of pink for a truly three dimensional appearance.

Try Textured

If you want to add real energy to your ordinary kitchen, consider using faux finish paint. Home improvement stores or paint stores, today, sell pre-made paints that are already prepared to look like a particular faux finish with just a simple stroke of a paint brush. For instance, there are faux finish paints that looks like suede, leather and other popular materials.

Moldings and Trim

You can keep the kitchen walls and ceiling white or a light beige shade and then paint the baseboards or moldings a different shade. Be daring, think fun, exciting and inviting. You can try navy, green, red or even yellow to make a statement that families and neighbors will surely be talking about for a long time after a visit.

Cool Ceiling

You can just paint the kitchen ceiling only instead of the walls. Go for a fun pattern, could be stripes or something shocking like purple and then leave the walls white. Also, you can wallpaper the ceiling, leaving the walls plain for an unusual statement.

Make or create a scene

You can paint a landscape scene from your favorite city on your kitchen wall or even go for an abstract graphic design that you can draw either free-hand or use a painter’s tape to deliver an abstract graphic design. You can as well consult a professional painter here, for more detailed advise and quote.

How to paint exterior brick

Painted brick has a unique style of its own and is being seen more and more as decorating trends shift. If you want to paint brick, be sure to patch any cracks or ruts that are usually caused by ivy breaking through when the bricks are outside.

1. Clean the Brick

Use a pressure washer at the beginning as it is the simplest way to clean exterior brick.
Set your pressure washer to somewhere between 1500 and 2000 pounds per square inch. Do not go higher than that pressure range when washing the bricks, as too much force could damage the mortar. For more difficult efflorescence and mildew deposits, add soap to the stream. The point of this wash is to clear any dirt, grime, and loose paint.
Once the washing is completed, give the brick plenty of time to fully dry. It will take a few days at least because brick is a porous material that traps moisture.

2. Remove Loose Paint and Fix Mortar

Ensure you remove all loose paint left behind on the brick face so that it won’t cause early chipping when you eventually apply your coat.

3. Sand the Brick Smooth

Use a palm or circular sander with a minimum 80 grit paper to sand the brick smooth.
Then, repair any damaged or missing mortar. You can make use of a premixed acrylic mortar patch which will enable you to prime and paint as soon as it is dry. Or alternatively, you can mix a powder mortar yourself, however, this will take a few weeks to dry before you can begin priming.

4. Prime Brick

For painting exterior brick, always use a high quality acrylic or latex masonry primer. Make sure you prime those places where efflorescence and mildew occurred first, so that you can add an extra coat if needed. It usually take 1-2 hours for the coat to dry. Allow the primer to dry completely before moving on to painting.

5. Caulk and Seal

Any area that can let in water should be caulked, even if it is an opening as small as a 1/16 inch. This may include windows, doors, trim, and chimney caps. Make sure you use 100-percent acrylic caulk and a foam backer rod for bigger cracks.

6. Clear the Dust

Before you begin, remove all the dust resting on the brick face with a brush or vacuum.

7. Paint the Brick

Inclusion and as inspired by, Elastomeric or 100-percent acrylic latex are the two best options when choosing for exterior house. Apply two coats in order to achieve its highest durability.

Top Roofing Materials

From asphalt shingles to wood shake, roofing materials is an important consideration which contributes to the overall appearance and style of your home.

Update your existing roof gives you a chance to add value to your home and communicate your homes feel and look. While roof preparation, framing, and installation are very important, the material you choose for your roof can take the exterior of your home to the next level.

When choosing roofing materials, consider the following questions.

  • What is the weight of this material and will it require special framing?
  • Is there availability of the material in a variety of colors and styles that complement your home?
  • Are the fire codes in your area met by this material?
  • Are there installation problems and special maintenance to keep in mind?
  • Does the material offer good performance in extreme weather conditions that are common in your area?
  • What is the life span, cost, and warranty for this material?

The answers to these questions will help you determine the best option for your home. There are many options for roofing materials available and here is a summary of some of the most popular ones confirmed by a roofer in Miami.

Asphalt Shingles

The material most commonly used in residential roofing in the United States, asphalt shingles are popular because they are inexpensive and easy to install. These tiles can be reinforced with organic materials (cellulose) or fiber glass without modifying the appearance of the shingle.

Clay and Concrete Tiles

Clay and concrete tiles add elegance and texture to a roof. Real flat tiles, wavy or scalloped clay are extremely durable, but also very heavy, and must be installed by a professional. Concrete tiles are cheaper than genuine clay, but also have great weight.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs are usually resistant to extreme weather conditions. Available in two types, panels and tiles, metal roofs always come in copper, aluminum, stainless steel and zinc. They are lightweight, elegant, recyclable and durable, and something to consider if you are interested in collecting rainwater.

Offering lots of beautiful and elegant distinctive appearance, the colors of slate include shades of black, green, gray, red and purple.

Wood Shingles and Shake

Many homeowners like the look of wooden shingles and shake and the way they fade into an attractive shade of gray. Wood shakes are handmade and look rougher than wood shingles, which are usually cut by machine. If you live in an area prone to fire, search for Class A wooden roofing products, including shingles treated with fire resistant coating.

Synthetic Roofing Products

We now have synthetic roofing products, including plastic, rubber, and polymer roofing developed to give the color, appearance and texture of natural materials such as slate and wood. These products are designed to be robust and easy to maintain. Some of these materials are fire resistant.

Be sure to check with the manufacturer and to get information on warranty. Look for facilities that have been established at least 10 years to see what the wear characteristics of this material are in your area

Mid last year, I happened to damage my front door glass while i was carrying out a window replacement project, and i discovered i knew very few things when it comes to buying a front door; This is what prompted this article after conducting series of research.

A front entrance door do not only add beauty and make your house look new and renovated, but also serves as the first point that most people notice when they approach or drive by your house. Your door can tell a lot about you, your home, and your life. Your door can welcome people in or cause insecurity or hesitation. Keeping all these in mind, it is no wonder that the choice of the right front door can be a daunting task. Undoubtedly, the fact that the front door is the first thing noticed is a very important factor to consider when buying a new front door.

The other factor to consider is access. Your door should not only add beauty and invite people to knock, but it should also allow easy access. Things like door handles and door design definitely matter, but the size of your front door should also be put into consideration. If a major change in size is warranted, this is the time to figure that out. You want to be sure it will open wide enough to fit the new stove or your upgrade to a double bed; and I’m sure more than one of us has bought a new couch to find that there was no way to bring it into the house – without using a chainsaw anyway . This factor may require that you look into the future with the eye of your mind, but it is worth thinking.

The third factor to consider is safety. In this day and age, keeping your home safe from intruders is a must. You have to consider where you live and how much of a threat forced entry to your home is. Things like locking options, door materials, door thickness and options of glass are useful considerations when the safety of your household is at stake. You will want to get expert advice where this is concerned. Another aspect of the safety of your door is to ensure that unwanted pests cannot find a way in. Pests like mice can slip under a door with a hole the width of a pencil! Making sure that your new door is impenetrable by man and animals is a major concern.

Another consideration is weather and climate. What is the weather condition like where you live? You want to be sure your new door can keep the warm air in the cooler months and cool air during the warmer months. Also important, it should keep drafts and cold winds of winter from finding a place to blow through. You want to be sure your door is energy efficient, and you want to be sure you understand the options that are available for the model you are considering for weather insulation, stripping and glass.

The last, and perhaps most important of the factors to consider when buying a new front door is the place to go. Improper installation can lead to heat loss, increase cooling and heating costs, as well as access for pests and perhaps intruders. Bad or poor material quality may cause door to wear out fast and can allow opening and easy damage.

How to Choose the Right Deck Paint

If your deck is looking tired, it may be time to give it a “pick me up” in the form of a new deck painting. And there’s no better time to refurbish a deck than spring, when you can enjoy the fruits of your work throughout the summer.

Right before your preferred best house painters takes over the project, you will need to make a choice of the kind of paint to use.  In recent years, many owners used “alkyd” oil-based paints for decks, but these products have some major flaws: first, they soon become very brittle; and secondly, they absorb harmful UV rays from the sun. Consequently, oil based coatings degrade rapidly, wear away and must be reapplied as often as once a year.

Fortunately, manufacturers now offer much better options in the form of 100% acrylic deck stains that are 100% water based as a result of recent technologies. These products do not share any of the defects of oil based coatings, so that they not only make a deck look good . . . but luckily, they also last much longer.

Unlike oil-based deck paints, these 100% acrylic coatings that are water-based form a highly flexible protective film that is also very resistant to UV rays. Therefore, acrylics are really the perfect antidote for what ails products like oil-based paints.

It is easy to see that time after time, acrylic coatings outperform oil-based coatings, and this is true in all types of wood, cedar, pine, redwood, and wood composite materials.

If you like the idea of tender cycle spots on your outdoor deck, then a layer of 100% acrylic water-based paint is just the perfect way to go. You even have the option of choosing from three popular options and each offers specific advantages:

Acrylic stains are pigmented coatings slightly semitransparent that allow you to maintain or change the color of the wood or composite without hiding its grain or texture. These coatings are water resistant and contains special components to keep mildew under control. These semi-transparent coatings typically last about 18 months.

Acrylic solid color stains – sometimes called opaque stains – have more pigment than the semi-transparent products, so its color tends to darken the wood grain. At the same time, the pigment adds additional UV protection and durability, so solid colored spots last longer, usually three to five years.

Acrylic coatings for wood restoration are the product of choice for severely degraded and some usually neglected decks. These are acrylic coatings that are essentially super-thick and really fill and hide the cracks and crevices of up to ¼ inch deep. In addition, these coatings create a non-slip finish which is resistant to cracking and peeling in the future. As with other acrylic products, they come in a wide range of attractive colors and offer some protection to mildew too.

All these acrylic coatings have excellent adhesion to decks and other surfaces, which is another reason why they last long. And unlike oil-based alkyd, requiring cleaning solvents, you can cleanup using soap and water after the application of water-based acrylic coatings.

Therefore, unless your idea of a good time is to apply another coat of stain, consider using an acrylic coating that is longer lasting when your wood deck starts sending distress signals. You’ll definitely be doing your deck and yourself a favor.

How to Clean Your Microwave Naturally

The microwave is one of those things that can easily get dirty, and is also so easy to ignore. At least that is the case with many people. But it does need to be cleaned. Fortunately, there are easy and natural methods to clean the microwave! You probably already have all the ingredients around. All you need is lemon juice, water, vinegar, a bowl and a cleaning cloth. If you do not have lemon juice, you can leave it out, but many people prefer to use it, as it helps to neutralize the strong smell of vinegar and adds extra cleaning power.

Fill your bowl that is microwavable with a cup of water, then add 1/3 to 1/2 cup vinegar. You can choose to measure – or simply estimate and pour the lemon juice and vinegar (more if the microwave is very dirty). Then add a few tablespoons of lemon juice. Put the vinegar mixture in the microwave. Heat for about 3-4 minutes. The water mixture will be very hot, so be careful not to get burnt. Now take your cleaning cloth (or paper towel) and clean. The steam and vinegar helps to loosen dirt and food.

For stubborn stains, you can wet the cleaning cloth in the hot vinegar water (carefully!) And then wipe with the damp cloth. You can also put the bowl of vinegar / water in the microwave and heat again for 1 minute. Add more steam if your microwave oven is very dirty and it takes longer to clean. Another tip is to use a toothbrush for small cracks and corners.

Now your microwave is neatly cleaned! And naturally too. And you did not have to buy expensive cleaners with chemicals either!

With such easy and natural way to clean the microwave, you can do it regularly without waiting for a kitchen remodel project. It usually only takes a few minutes to heat the vinegar and 30 seconds to clean.

Tips for Maintaining Your Sanity during a Renovation

Renovation of a home is very different from building a new one. With a renovation, your house becomes a workplace. If you cannot move out of the house while the renovation is being done, be prepared, as living with the project from beginning to end can take its toll on you and your family, I worked with a St. Louis basement finishing company and the way our clients respond to our steady interruption to their privacy at the course of the renovation can be overwhelming.

Once construction begins, you’ll want simple pleasures, like a dustless home or kitchen in full operation. While a makeshift kitchen in your living room does not seem so bad at first, it’ll get old quickly.

If you are working with a renovator, here are five tips to help you stay healthy and sane during the process:

Establish Clear Lines of Communication

Having open communication with your renovator is a vital key. Decide who you and your renovator should contact for daily decisions or an after hours emergency. For example, your contact can be the lead carpenter for the job, while the contact of the renovator could be your spouse. Designate a backup for each contact person to ensure continuity in the absence of anyone. Speak up if you are unsure of any aspect of the project, be sure to inform the contact person.

Convene a Meeting before Construction

One way to ensure the success of your project is to plan and convene a meeting prior to construction. This allows your renovator explain how the work will progress and to clarify procedures. It also offers your renovator and you the opportunity to prepare for those problems that may arise later on. Some of the topics to be discussed include whether you will allow your renovator to place a company sign on your property? (Remember that, in addition to being a marketing tool, the signs helps suppliers and contractors locate your home.) What areas of your home will be out of reach of workers? Does your home have an alarm system? Will workers be needing a key or is someone always there? How will you ensure that your children and pets are out of the work area? Does the renovator expect any disruption of public services during the project? If so, when and for how long? At certain stages, the project may affect basic household needs such as water and electricity. Will you have to vacate the house at any time?

Establish guidelines for the crew working on the renovation project: Working hours, impact on neighbors, bathroom facilities and parking are all considerations. Avoid Renovation Angst Keep your eyes on the prize and remember why you are remodeling. At home, designate a haven where you can escape the chaos and bustle.

Dampen the Dust

A renovation is a dust pile, so try to stick with it, even if it seems like a lost battle. It helps to remove and declutter or cover with plastic, anything that might be damaged by dust.It also helps to seal the doors and stairs and put off the central air or heating when workers are sanding. While you’re there, stock up on extra heating filters so you can change them frequently.

Perhaps, you are planning to paint your home and you don’t know when to do it. This article will guide you on when it is okay to paint the exterior part of your home without issues.

Many DIYers usually fail to take temperature into consideration when planning the painting project of their home. Even though the temperature requirements now are flexible than they used to, you still need to plan in advance in order to ensure that you have the right paint for your needs  at the right time.

Normal outdoor painting temperature

The standard rule for outdoor or exterior painting  goes like this:

When temperatures outside fall between 40 and 90 degrees, oil paints can be applied and at temperatures ranging from 50 to 85, latex paints can be applied.

Nevertheless, some paints can be applied at temperatures outside the normal temperature. For instance, if you want to paint your house at a low temperature like 35, discuss it with the clerk at the time of purchase. Note that some paints are usually designed to cure at temperatures outside the normal range.

For how long should the temperature remain?

Generally, temperatures have to stay within the range that is acceptable for about 48 hours after it has being applied to the house.

What if I don’t follow the rule about acceptable temperatures?

The paint will not cure properly if you don’t follow all manufacturers’ recommendations about the temperature and curing time. At first, you won’t notice anything and you will spend a few years thinking you got away with it. But this could lead to peeling, blistering and other unattractive defects. These changes will take full effect after a couple of seasons.

Other weather related rules to be followed

First, you should apply the paint when you are sure there will be no rain or dew for 48 hours after you finished painting.

Also, the paint must be kept out of direct sunlight. In order to do this, start your painting on the side of the house that is away from sunlight and then move with the sunlight as you continue.

Another thing to note is that instructions usually vary from manufacturer to manufacture. Read all manufacturer’s instructions before you begin any painting project so as to ensure that the temperatures outside is in line of what is acceptable. Whenever you are in doubt about what to do, talk to a customer service representative when buying the paint.

Curtain walls are non-structural cladding systems for the exterior walls of buildings. They are usually associated with large buildings with multi-storey.

They separate the interior from the exterior, however, they support their own weight and also the loads imposed on them which they usually transfer back to the main building structure. This is the opposite of many traditional constructions which the external walls are a vital part of the primary building structure. Ideally, curtain walls are made up of a lightweight aluminum frame which opaque or glazed infill panels can be fixed on it. Curtain wall systems consist of one of the elements of front technology in tall buildings. A facade includes cladding elements, window walls and curtain walls which gives rise to the exterior envelope of the building.

The curtain wall systems have structural importance that is similar to that of other structural elements of the building. Because of its higher exposure to exterior atmosphere, it must be designed, installed and maintained properly, bearing in mind the sustainability and remodel

Types of Curtain Walls

Curtain wall systems are usually factory pre-casted systems i.e they are brought to the site before assembling. Curtain wall systems are of two types depending on the way each component is and target usage; here the my findings while preparing for a kitchen remodel  project a while ago.

They are:

Stick Curtain Wall System

Unitized Curtain Wall System

Stick Curtain Wall System always have its components assembled piece by piece on the building at the site. Stick curtain wall system are mainly installed in small regions or low to rise building. This is so because, in order to reach higher elevations, exterior access is important. However, For this type, additional requirements such as cranes, scaffolding etc. will be needed.

This system has the advantage of low shipping cost because on-site adjustments are possible, although the labor and time consumption is said to be high.

Unitized curtain wall systems have to do with assembling with interlocking units that are bought completely from the factory. All the components are bought from the factory together as one unit. Unlike sticky curtain wall system, individual installations of each component are not necessary. The size of unitized curtain walls always depends on the floor to floor height of the building. Therefore, it is important to  consider transportation and installation while planning the depth of facade. Unitized curtain wall system is usually used in high rise building and it does not require exterior supports like scaffolding or crane. Only a temporary hoist or mini cranes can be held over floor to keep it held during installation.

This system has the advantage of higher quality and faster construction because of factory manufacturing. However, it has high shipping charge because of the requirement of larger protection during transportation.
